A truck driver was killed in a tractor trailer accident on Bent Mountain Road, causing Route 221 to be shut down most of Sunday.

The accident occurred around 8:00 a.m, Sunday. Emergency and transportation officers expected the area to remain closed through most of Sunday evening.

The driver was a 35-year-old man of North Carolina. Police say he was transporting fireworks to Radford. Due to the explosive materials, the situation was even more delicate for emergency workers. If the truck had caught fire, it had the potential to create an explosion.

The closed portion of Route 221 was reopened just after 9:00 p.m.
